Gibson, S. and Shirreffs, S. (2013). Beverage consumption habits “24/7” among British adults: association with total water intake and energy intake. Nutrition Journal, 12(1), p.9.
This study explored the dietary records of 1724 British adults and looked in detail at their beverage consumption patterns "24/7". These were then linked with their total water intake and associations were explored between drinks consumed and energy intake on different days. Alcoholic drinks were a major factor in high consumption of water and calories, especially at weekends. Although caloric drinks were associated with higher energy intake, this was less than that of the drinks themselves, suggesting some compensation occurs.
